What is thyroid eye disease?
Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition, closely linked to Graves' disease, in which the immune system attacks the muscles and fatty tissue behind the eyes. That causes inflammation and swelling that can lead to bulging eyes (proptosis), double vision, pressure, pain, and redness.
TED can occur whether or not thyroid hormone levels are currently well controlled, which is why it sometimes catches patients off guard even after their thyroid condition itself is being managed.
How infusion therapy helps
TEPEZZA (teprotumumab) was the first FDA-approved treatment built specifically for TED. It works by blocking a receptor (IGF-1R) involved in the inflammatory process driving the eye changes, rather than just addressing symptoms after they appear.
Treatment is a course of eight infusions given every three weeks. Clinical studies have shown significant reductions in eye bulging and double vision, with benefit seen regardless of how long someone has had TED.
