Osteoporosis: Prolia and Reclast Infusion Treatment Options

For bones that have become too fragile, infusion and injectable therapies offer a more powerful option than oral medication alone for preventing fractures.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones lose density and become weak and brittle, increasing the risk of fracture, sometimes from a fall that wouldn't otherwise cause a break. It's most common after menopause and in older adults, and often has no symptoms until a fracture occurs.

A bone density scan (DEXA) is used to diagnose osteoporosis and assess fracture risk, which helps guide how aggressively it needs to be treated.

How infusion therapy helps

Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an IV infusion given just once a year that slows the rate of bone breakdown, helping maintain bone density with a treatment schedule far less frequent than daily oral medications.

Prolia (denosumab) is an injectable (not IV) biologic given every six months that works through a different mechanism, blocking a protein involved in bone breakdown, and is often used for patients who can't tolerate other osteoporosis medications or who need a more potent option.
